Dance Specific Physiotherapy

Dancers, and other artistic athletes, are a unique combination of athlete and artist. As such, they require a specialized approach to assessment and treatment that not only assesses the physical aspect of their impairment, but also the aesthetic implications. As former dancers and teachers, our staff are familiar with the demands that dancers place on their bodies and are better able to help them get back to the activity they love.

Dance Injury Treatment and Rehabilitation

As a dancer, an injury can be devastating. Not only are you physically unable to participate in an activity you love, but for many, dance is also an integral part of their identity and social network. There is nothing more frustrating than being told to simply ‘take a break’ ‘stop dancing’ or ‘pick a different sport’ by medical professionals who don’t understand your injury. As therapists who have been in the dance world, we get it! That’s why we’re here to help you get back to class and on stage performing as quickly as possible.

Our therapists are closely connected to the international dance medicine community and pride themselves on staying up to date with the latest research and treatment options for performing artists.

Dance Specific Screening Assessment

A Dance Specific Screening Assessment is a valuable tool for dancers of any age or level. Understanding their own unique anatomy gives dancers a sense of autonomy and allows them to train within their own physical parameters. This leads to a decrease in injuries, and enhanced dance technique and performance potential.

This in-depth assessment includes:

  • Detailed dance history

  • Relevant medical history

  • Postural alignment, stability and control

  • Muscle balance

  • Flexibility

  • Hip health (including assessment of turnout)

  • Foot and ankle mobility and control

  • Dance specific technique

  • Individualized exercise program to address any areas of concern

Pre-pointe Assessment (group or individual)

Going ‘en pointe’ is a major milestone in any young ballet dancers training.  However, if not done correctly, it can have serious consequences for the dancer’s health.  Having an assessment done by a trained professional can reduce risk of injury and ensure a safe progression to dancing en pointe.

This assessment includes:

  • Dance history

  • Stage of physical development

  • Overall dance technique

  • Postural control

  • Core stability and strength

  • Turnout range and strength

  • Foot and ankle mobility

  • Foot and ankle strength

Students are provided with immediate feedback and corrective exercises are prescribed for any areas that may need further development. Once all requirements of the assessment have been met, the therapist will consult with the primary ballet teacher who will give the final approval to purchase pointe shoes.
